St Helens LINk held a public meeting on 7 April to discuss staff attitudes, particularly in GP surgeries.
This was one of three issues which people in St Helens wanted LINk to focus on in its workplan. The other two were access to information and hygiene.

At the meeting, members of the public discussed what they felt wasn't good about their GP practice. This included:

  • The difficulty of getting a GP appointment, even more so when trying to book one in advance.
  • The lack of privacy when discussing issues with receptionists
  • Receptionists 'diagnosing' patients then referring to the GP
  • Receptionists treating patients as a burden or with hostility
  • Little respect between practice and patient
  • Receptionists discussing other people's cases in front of members of the public.
What worked well or possible solutions was also discussed. This included:
  • Bigger practices with a wider range of services
  • More flexibility in meeting patients' needs
  • Longer opening hours
  • Use of practice nurses to provide more services
  • More services provided in primary care.

This feedback will be used as evidence for LINk when working with GP practices to improve patient care.
